The Oxygen Sensor measures the amount of Oxygen (O2) gas in air.
Making a Measurement
To obtain oxygen concentration in percent, the oxygen sensor's mV output is multiplied by a conversion factor. The conversion factor is determined by the user during calibration. To calibrate divide 20.95 percent by the sensor's mV output in open air. For example, 20.95 % O2 / 12 mV = 1.746 % O2 / mV. The oxygen sensor’s mV output multiplied by 1.746 will yield the percentage of oxygen present for the current humidity, temperature, and elevation.
The concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere is 20.95 percent. However, at higher elevations the air is less dense and the sensor should be recalibrated to account for this. Post-calibration changes in pressure, temperature, or humidity can introduce an error.
Example datalogger programs are available to account for changes in pressure, temperature, and humidity. All oxygen sensors come equipped to measure temperature, but humidity and pressure sensors must be added separately.
