Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is the portion of the light spectrum that plants use for photosynthesis. Plants need PAR to survive, and a certain amount each day will help them really thrive. Greenhouse growers, plant researchers, and aquarium keepers track and regulate PAR levels. This meter makes it convenient to spot check and log PAR levels over, under, and across plant canopies or coral reefs.
Meter & Display
The handheld portion of this meter features an e-paper screen, which can simultaneously display a wealth of information such as PAR levels, active modes, remaining battery, and menu options. Navigation is straightforward thanks to onscreen explanations and full button headings. The USB-C port is used to recharge the battery, download data to a computer, and perform firmware updates.
Robust PAR Sensor
The meter is connected to an Apogee SQ-500 full-spectrum PAR sensor, known for its consistent accuracy. It measures PAR in the 389 to 692 nm range under any light source, including LEDs. The sensor is saltwater safe so that it can be moved around a coral reef or mounted in an aquarium to log data, while the meter is held in your hand or mounted outside of the water.
Measurement Modes
The device can be used for spot checking PAR levels or set to log data over time according to specified logging and averaging intervals. To provide a more accurate look at the total PAR in a day, the meter also calculates Daily Light Integral (DLI) from the logged data.
The meter offers an underwater mode, which automatically applies a correction factor to provide accurate data underwater. Toggling the mode on and off is quick, allowing you to take accurate measurements above and below water using the same instrument.
