Soil Moisture

The TEROS 12 measures three metrics: volumetric water content, temperature, and electroconductivity.

This is a TEROS 12 sensor with Modbus digital output. This output was added to improve compatibility with user systems and prevents the need for repeatedly paying for a cloud subscription to access the data. This sensor is fit for a range of soil types and EC levels, so you can be confident in the accuracy of your data.
Field Deployable
The TEROS 12 is rugged, designed to be deployed in a borehole or trench at multiple depths. Its sharp needles pierce through soil to ensure high contact with the medium and easy installation. Additionally, system integration and data exchange are simple due to its Modbus output. The TEROS 12 is built to be long-lasting to allow for extended periods of deployment. To make this possible in even more remote locations, its power consumption is minimal.
Stable Measurements
This sensor utilizes well-tested 70 MHz dielectric capacitance to minimize interference from soil salinity or texture. The needles are steel and salt resistant to prevent drift over time. Its 1.01 L volume of influence provides informative data for a soil region. High resolutions of 0.0010 m3/m3 (water content), 0.10 °C (temperature), and 1 μS/cm (electroconductivity) ensure precise measurements.

Built-In Measurements
In addition to the original features of the TEROS 12, Apogee has built in some calculations that originally the user was required to do manually. These are volumetric water content calculated directly from the measured bulk dielectric permittivity (VWCdielectric), volumetric water content using a calibration optimized for mineral soils like sand, silt, or clay mixtures (VWCmineral), and volumetric water content specific to soilless growing media (VWCsoilless). These are correlated to Modbus registers 6, 8, and 10, which can be found in the product manual.
Applications
The TEROS 12 is used in a variety of settings, from commercial agriculture to environmental research. Examples of applications include irrigation scheduling & management, understanding moisture movement in natural environments, identifying concentration of mineral soils, monitoring soil health in soilless substrates and greenhouses, analyzing fertilizer, salt, and solute movement, and multi-depth profiling in uneven terrain or along crop roots.
