Aspirated Radiation Shield

Apogee Instruments aspirated radiation shields provide accurate measurement of air temperature with minimal power draw.
Accurate measurement of air temperature
Apogee Instruments’ fan-aspirated radiation shield works with several temperature and humidity sensors to provide research-grade measurements with minimal power consumption. It is ideal for solar-powered sites.
Rugged, Low-Power Fan
The fan has an ingress protection (IP) rating of 55, which virtually eliminates moisture and dust ingress. At full speed, the fan's power requirement is 1 W (80 mA at 12 V DC). A 24 V DC fan is also available. Please contact Apogee's sales team for details. To conserve power, fan speed can be reduced to 0.3 W at night or when wind speed is greater than 3 m s-1 without loss of accuracy through pulse width modulation (PWM). If the fan is continuously operated at full speed, the lifetime is rated at 50,000 hours (5.7 years). The fan also includes a tachometer, which can track revolutions per minute of the fan.
Aerodynamic Shape
The curved inlet facilitates the reduction of air into the shield through the CoandĂŁ effect (tendency of fluid to follow a convex surface). The tapered diameter of the internal surface also enhances air velocity through the Venturi effect (reduction in fluid pressure after flowing through a constricted section of a pipe). Both effects contribute to more efficient air flow, which allows for a much lower powered fan than other fan-aspirated radiation shields on the market.

Standard adapter plugs are available for the Apogee ST-110 thermistor, the Apogee ST-300 PRT, the EE08-SS air temperature/relative humidity probe, the ATMOS 14, the CS HygroVUE 5, the CS 215, and the CS 107/108/109/109SS. Upon request, custom plugs are also available for sensors such as the Vaisala HMP110, the Campbell Scientific CS215, the Rotronic HC2-S3, or a combination of temperature sensors and relative humidity probes.

Research Grade Accuracy
Extensive tests with replicate shields over the past three years have shown our shield, the TS-100, compares favorably (± 0.02° C) to all of the higher-powered industry standard fan-aspirated shields. Additionally, using our recommended ST-110 precision thermistor provides a measurement uncertainty of ± 0.1 C.
Typical Applications
Applications of our product include air temperature and humidity measurements in weather networks (often for weather forecasting) and solar energy sites. Fan-aspirated shields are also important in the precise measurement of air temperature and humidity gradients above ground surface and in climate change monitoring. This product also helps PV sites meet the IEC 61724-1 air temperature measurement requirement.
High Quality Cable
Aspirated radiation shields feature an IP68, marine-grade stainless-steel cable connector located on the fan (optional for temperature sensors) to simplify sensor removal for maintenance and recalibration. The cable is a shielded, twisted-pair wire with a TPR jacket for high water resistance, UV stability, and flexibility in cold conditions.
Purchasing Options
There are two models to choose from when purchasing the shield. The TS-100 is a shield only model, while the TS-110 comes with a discounted, pre-installed ST-110 precision thermistor that provides ± 0.1 C uncertainty right out of the box.
